For The Love of Art

Role: Concepts. Art Direction, Storyboards, Project Development, Making Props, Design.

After Lockdown and to celebrate 50 years in business Consortium Education were keen to be seen by educators as not simply a supplier of products, but also a knowledgeable and supportive source of inspiration and information for educators.

Art materials are a big seller for Consortium and campaign launch coincided with schools reopening. So we teamed up with award winning art teacher, Andria Zafirakou to create some inspirational art content to get teachers excited about being back in the classroom and also to give children the chance to use materials they may not have had access to during lock-down.

The campaign was released across their social channels, via the brand website and through direct emails.

The face of the campaign

Andria was great and really embraced being part of the campaign, she was fantastic on camera, and her positive energy was so infectious - so she became very much the focus of our campaign visuals.

I directed her to pose for stills with large cards and props so we could add messages and graphics to pull the campaign look and feel together as one.

Embracing materials and each other

One of the focusses of the project was to embrace materials that perhaps children hadn’t had the opportunity to use whilst in lockdown, and also to focus on the joy of being back together again. We wanted each activity to be accessible to individuals (and to work in the classroom) but to also be able to be joined together somehow to create a larger group piece and a sense of community.

I had a call with Andria where we discussed possibilities and from that I devised three activities, Printing Techniques, Linear Portraits and Clay Tiles.

After the sensory deprivation and disconnection of lockdown it also felt important to devise activities that had a sensory element, a way to explore freely, or talk together about feelings.

I researched, story-boarded and created detailed production packs including shot lists for stills imagery for accompanying worksheets, information about learning outcomes specific to each ability level and a loose script to prompt Andria when in front of the camera.

We shot all the videos across one busy day, I directed on set and helped Andria to feel relaxed and cover off all the salient points in a natural way.

The Secondary level video for Clay Tiles is shown below.

To make the activities really easy to access and follow we also created downloadable worksheets for each activity, available via the Consortium website. Each worksheet had the activity broken down in steps to differentiate complexity for age groups or abilities.

The project was very well received, so much so we did it all again with some festive activities for Halloween, Diwali and Christmas.
